Present in Nigeria since 1962, TOTAL is among the three top-ranked international companies operating in Nigeria. The Group operates 4 out of the 52 licenses in which it holds a participating interest and 5 exploration licenses out of 8.
In 2005, its production share reached 250 kboe/day, compared with 271 kboe/day in 2004.
This represents about one third of TOTAL’s SEC production in Africa, underlining the fact that the Group’s activity in Nigeria represents one of the major contributions to the growth of company’s production, along with Angola, Norway, United Kingdom and Indonesia.
In Nigeria, TOTAL has opted for a growth strategy focused on the development of its deep offshore concessions, on LNG activities and exploration of new fields. The projects operated by TOTAL, in particular Akpo and Ofon Phase II, shall ensure growth on a mid-term basis.
The concessions operated by the company, namely OML 58, 100, 102 (40%, operator), OML 99 (Amenam, 30.4%, operator) and OML 130, account for about 50% of the Group’s production in Nigeria.
Amenam-Kpono Field: TOTAL as Operator with 30.40% Equity
In this field located in shallow waters, oil production occurred in July 2003 and reached its average level of production of 125 kboe/day during that summer.
Amenam Phase II’s Project (AKOGEP) aims at collecting and channeling associated gas to supply the NLNG liquefaction plant.
TOTAL’s remaining production arises from its (10%) share in SPDC Joint Venture, and from its part-ownerships of the Ekanga field (40%) and Bonga field (12,5%) where production started in November 2005.
Usan Field: TOTAL as Operator with 20% Equity
In the framework of a production sharing contract in OPL 222, Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited, has successfully achieved exploration in the deep water Usan.
In 2004, the drilling of Usan 5 and 6 oil wells confirmed the extension of the discovered oilfield to the west. In 2005, Usan 7 and 8 oil wells confirmed the extension to the east of the oilfield. The Field Development Plan of USAN has been approved by the national company NNPC, which is the title holder of the license. Production is scheduled to start in 2010.
OML 58: TOTAL as Operator with 40% Equity
Engineering studies have been launched for the additional development of the production and treatment facilities of OML 58.
Increased production arising from the upgrade is expected to start in 2008, production from the field reaching 76 kboe/day in 2004.
OML 102, Ofon II: TOTAL as Operator with 40% Equity
As part of the Field Development Plan for phase II of the Ofon field, “basic engineering” was achieved in January 2005. Start-up of this new phase shall increase production from the field by 70 kboe/day, with the start-up of the phase II (launched in 1997) scheduled for the end of 2009.
OML 130, Akpo: TOTAL as Operator with 24% Equity
The deep-offshore Akpo Field (ex-OPL246), started being developed since 2005. Production from this field started in March 2009.
In 2000, the TOTAL Group discovered Akpo’s oilfield, then Egina and Preowei Fields analysis of which is still underway. 50% of this block has been transferred to OML 130, which grants production rights on a long-term basis.
In addition, TOTAL in 2005 extended its acreage portfolio through the signing of several production sharing contracts as operator (OPL 221, OPL 223, next to block 222 where TOTAL discovered Usan Field) and OPL 215.
The Group has also taken a participating 40% share in OML 112 and 117.
With respect to fields not operated by TOTAL but in which it owns 10-12.5% equity, engineering studies are being carried out on different projects: Bonga North and South East, Afam (gas and condensates), Gbaran Ubie (gas and condensates).
Finally, TOTAL owns a 15% interest in a liquefaction plant operated by the Nigeria LNG Company; which has expanded its production into its fourth and fifth trains, respectively in November 2005 and February 2006. Asixth train is being developed, expected to start production in 2007.
As far as its Exploration & Production activity is concerned, the Group is partner in production sharing contracts. Thus, directly or through its national company, the State through its Oil Company, the NNPC deducts its equity share of production from every field.
