TOTAL Upstream carries out its work in oil and gas exploration, production and exportation in Nigeria within the framework of partnerships and joint ventures.
The new TOTAL Group
| Our parent group, TOTAL, came into being on May 6, 2003, the fruit of two successive mergers. The first took place in 1999, when the former TOTAL joined with Belgian oil company Petrofina to form TOTALFINA, and the second in 2000, when TOTALFINA combined with French oil company Elf Aquitaine to create TOTALFINAELF. TOTAL reflects a prestigious, Franco-Belgian oil and gas heritage that dates back to the 1920s. |

TEPNG and TUPNI for Oil and Gas, LNG for Gas
In Nigeria, TOTAL's upstream activities are carried out by two subsidiaries, TOTAL E&P Nigeria Limited (TEPNG) and TOTAL Upstream Nigeria Limited (TUPNI) for deep offshore operations. TOTAL Upstream was incorporated as TOTAL E&P Nigeria Limited (TEPNG) in May 1962. The TOTAL Group is also present in the country's Gas Utilisation Programme through another subsidiary, TOTAL LNG Nigeria Limited, which holds shares in NLNG, is a partner of the Bonny Gas Liquefaction Plant.
Our Nigerian operations, run by a staff of about 1,300 at offices in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt, are carried out in joint-venture and exploration partnerships with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Shell, ENI Petrobas, ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, NEXEN, South Atlantic, and the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG).
Deep Offshore, a new frontier for TOTAL
TOTAL is banking on ultra-deep offshore developments to ensure Nigeria's longer-term oil and gas future. With the discovery of the deep offshore deposits Ukot (1990s), Akpo (in 2000) and Usan (in 2002), the Group expects to make a significant contribution towards helping Nigeria and achieve its objectives of increasing reserves to 40 billions barrels by 2010 and doubling its oil production to 4 million b/d.
Of the ten deep offshore discoveries in Nigeria, TOTAL Upstream is operator in three and partner in another three. Finding Nigeria's fields was not a question of luck but rather the result of 30 years of experience in deep offshore production worldwide. TOTAL's development of innovative seismic processing and interpretation tools and methods allows it to correctly predict the location of such reservoirs. Production methods for raising oil and gas from great depths and under great pressures and temperatures represent another major achievement making today's exploits possible.
Objectives for 2008
TOTAL Upstream will pursue new opportunities and challenges for both individual and corporate growth. In 2008 we will be guided by the following major objectives:
- HSE: Continuous improvement on HSE performance objectives including effluent discharge reduction and gas flare down targets.
- Security: Based on our volatile operating environment, Our Security focus will be to continuously protect our personnel, assets and image from malicious acts.
- Projects:
- Akpo: It is expected to come on stream at the end of the year. Akpo will produce at its plateau, 180,000 barrels of condensate daily and 8 million metric tons of gas.
OML 58 Upgrade will progress at deliberate speed in the course of the year.
So also the O-U-R Pipeline and Obite Independent Power Project (IPP). They are geared to meet on time gas delivery to the domestic market and the NLNG and to increase power generation in line with national objectives. The IPP is planned to supply 440MW of electricity to the national grid.
- Usan: Mobilisation of Usan Team for the development of the Usan Deepwater Project will proceed apace in 2008. All major contracts for the actualisation of the project will be signed in the course of the year. Usan has a strong focus on Nigerian Content with more than 11 million man-hours targeted. It is due on stream by 2011 with 180,000 bopd planned production.
- Finance: Work towards performing within budget while continuing negotiations with the NNPC on the New Gas Act. Continue work with the and other partners for the funding of the Akpo and Usan Projects.
