ISO 14001: Obite gas Plant recertified for another 3 years

Obite Gas Plant gets another 3 years certification following audit by British Standard Institute.

Obite Gas Plant As a requirement of the Environmental Management System (EMS), the ISO 14001 certificate expires after three years and a certified facility is expected to undergo a recertification audit at the end of which the certification is either retained or withdrawn.

In line with this requirement, a recertification audit of the company's Obite Gas Plant took place on Tuesday, March 22, 2011. At the end of the exercise, the plant's environmental performance and environmental management systems were found to conform to the ISO 14001 Standard and declared satisfactory for the renewal of its certificate for another 3 years.

The audit also provided a framework for a holistic, strategic approach to the company's environmental policy, plans and actions while ensuring sustainability, continual improvement and proactive solutions to HSE Performance.

Specifically, the audit:
  • Evaluated the adequacy, effectiveness and suitability of Site EMS;
  • Reviewed the status of the EMS implementation, and;
  • Identified areas of concern and resolved same in line with the ISO 14001 standard.
ISO 14001 certification comes with numerous benefits among which are:
  • Provision of a framework for the improvement of HSE performances;
  • Possible reduction of environment costs e.g. Energy savings, wastes treatment, Emissions tax;
  • Credibility for external stakeholders (public, NGO…);
  • Improvement of relationships with authorities;
  • Recognition of "good business" and good practices
  • Assurance to management that it is in control of the organizational processes and activities which have an impact on the environment
  • Assurance to employees that they are working in an environmentally responsible organization.
The Obite Gas Plant (OGP) which is the company's first gas utilization facility began production in 1999 and achieved its first ISO 14001 certification in November 2007.
