Total Upstream companies in Nigeria will be fully represented by a wide spectrum of its officials at the forthcoming 29th edition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition (NAICE), taking place in Abuja, from 1-3 August, 2005.
The theme of the conference, "Nigeria's Petroleum Industry and the Challenges of first Quarter of the 21st century" has been designed to take a closer look at the country's petroleum industry, the global challenges and proffer the way forward. The theme tallies with "Consolidating Growth", the central message that Total is projecting at the conference.
This year's conference is coming against the backdrop of the phenomenal growth of Total upstream companies in Nigeria. In May this year, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) authorized Total to begin developing the offshore Akpo field on Oil Mining Licence (OML) 130. Akpo which is at a water depth of 1150 -1750 metres will take 42 months to complete. It is expected that the first condensate will be obtained in November 2008, while the first gas export will be in February 2009. Akpo field has 44 wells which will be drilled by two drill ships and tied-in to the Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) vessel by means of a network of sea lines and risers.
Also recently, a farm-in agreement was signed with NorEast Petroleum Nigeria Limited for the Oil Prospecting Licence (OPL) 215, offshore southwest Nigeria. And in July, Total signed a production sharing contract (PSC) agreement with the NNPC for OPL 223, offshore southeast Nigeria.
Total's qualitative intervention in the development of human capital in Nigeria was also recently recognized when the University of Port Harcourt awarded a Doctor of Science degree to the Group Chairman and CEO, Mr. Thierry Desmaret at a special convocation. The group has established the Institute of Petroleum Studies at the University of Port Harcourt in collaboration with the IFP School in France. It is a graduate school for continuing education, applied research and capacity building for sustainable development of the petroleum industry.
