Representatives of Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited (EPNL), Onyinye Chidiebere-Nwokeocha and Adedotun Oluwanle, aka Turtledoves, emerged top among African participants at the just concluded Rallye des Gazelles which took place in Morocco from March 15 to 29, 2008.
Although the Turtledoves took position 45 out 76 in the over all final rankings, they were also placed 6th among the 10 teams that represented the Total Group in this year’s edition of the rally.
The Nigerian team beat Teams Velvetchia of E&P Angola; Les Lionnes of E&P Cameroun and Basadi South Africa of RM-AMO to emerge top among the African subsidiaries of the Group that participated in the prestigious event.
A women-only event, the “Rallye des Gazelles” is open to both amateurs and professionals. It tests competitors’ desert navigation skills as they struggle against harsh driving conditions aboard 4x4s, motorbikes or quad bikes with just a map and a compass.
To win, competitors have to find the shortest distance between various checkpoints that make up the race course.
No fewer than 90 female Total employees have shared in the values of courage, solidarity, mutual assistance, generosity and self-esteem that the rally presents since it began 18 years ago.
Otobong Udosen and Edidiong Eshiet represented EPNL in last year’s rally where they placed 29 in the overall final ranking.
A representative of Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Saudatu Bungudu and another Staff of the ministry were part of the Nigerian Government Delegation to the rally.
